Horton Smith, Springfield native, won the first Masters in 1934 and again in 1936 then named the Augusta National Invitational Tournament. In 1934, first prize was $1500. He was one of the youngest golfers to compete and he won the most PGA events (36) before Tiger Woods. “Smith earned the nickname the Missouri Rover by tirelessly travelling the country by car, train and even boat to get to tournaments.” His name lives on at Horton Smith Municipal Golf Course in Springfield, Missouri and he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1990.
“To me, the Augusta National course has character, individuality and personality. It is one of the few courses that really presents two games on almost every hole; a game to reach the greens and another to figure the ever-challenging contours after reaching the greens.” Horton Smith, 1908-1963
